What affects courier prices?
Distance and journey time
The biggest factor. We price from real road distance and drive time, with a minimum charge for short jobs. Per-mile rates taper on longer runs.
Vehicle size
A small van is the cheapest option. Long wheelbase and Luton vans cost more because they cost more to run and carry larger loads.
Urgency
Collection within an hour adds 30% (minimum £30), within four hours 15%, and flexible timing is 5% cheaper.
Time of day and zones
Out-of-hours collection adds £10 to £25. The London Congestion Charge (£18), Dartford Crossing (£3.5) and Humber Bridge (£5) are passed on at cost.
Methodology
Every figure on this page is computed by the same quote engine that prices a booking on Hauly (rate card version October 2026). Examples assume a standard next-day booking, an average journey time of about 1.2 minutes per mile plus 10 minutes, and include the card processing fee. They exclude urgency, out-of-hours and zone charges, which are listed above. This is Hauly’s own pricing, not an average of other couriers, and it will change when the rate card changes.

On the Hauly rate card, a small-van job costs from £61 for a local trip (about 10 miles) to £243 for 200 miles, for a standard next-day booking with the card fee included. Same-day, collection within hours, evenings, weekends and the London Congestion Charge add to that. The price is fixed and shown before you pay.
Why is a courier dearer than Royal Mail or Evri?
A courier sends one dedicated driver for your job alone, so you pay for the driver and vehicle for the journey rather than a share of a depot network. It is the right choice when speed, fragility, size or a delivery record matter, and the wrong one for small low-value parcels.
How is a Hauly price worked out?
From the real road distance and journey time between the two postcodes, with a minimum charge, progressive per-mile rates, a percentage for urgency, flat amounts for out-of-hours collection, and zone and toll charges passed through at cost. The calculation is deterministic: the same job gets the same price.

Distance and journey time, vehicle size, how soon you need collection, the time of day or week, and any congestion charge, bridge crossing or toll on the route.
