What Affects Courier Prices?
Distance
The single biggest factor. Local deliveries (under 30 miles) cost 50-70% less than cross-country routes.
Vehicle Size
Small van deliveries start lower. Large van or Luton requirements can add 30-50% to the base rate.
Urgency
Same-hour and emergency collections attract premium rates. Booking with 2+ hours notice gets the best prices.
Fuel Costs
Diesel price fluctuations directly affect courier rates. Q1 2026 saw a 4% increase in average UK fuel costs.

Methodology
This index is compiled from quoted rates across UK courier networks during Q1 2026 (January–April). Prices reflect direct-to-driver rates for standard goods (non-hazardous, under 500kg) using small to medium vans. All figures exclude VAT. Local is defined as under 30 miles, regional as 30–100 miles, and national as 100+ miles from origin.
Year-on-year changes compare Q1 2026 with Q1 2025 data. Trends labelled “up” indicate above-inflation increases driven primarily by fuel cost rises and increased demand in those regions.
