TL;DR: The best courier near you is the one with a driver close to your collection postcode, a fixed price you can see before paying, and proof of delivery. On Hauly you enter two postcodes and get a price from £61 in seconds, with no account. Collection is often within about an hour, depending on driver availability.

Searching for a courier service near you usually means one thing: something has to move today. This guide explains how a local courier actually works, what drives the price and how to pick the right option, then links to the Hauly page for your city.

How a same-day courier near you works

A same-day courier is not a parcel network. Nothing goes to a depot or waits for a lorry. A driver in a car or van collects from your door and drives straight to the destination.

That is why two things matter more than the company name:

  1. How close a driver is to you. The nearer the driver is to your collection postcode when you book, the sooner they arrive.
  2. How the job is priced. Reputable couriers price by real road distance and vehicle size and show you the figure before you pay.

On Hauly you enter the collection and delivery postcodes, pick what you are sending and when, and see a fixed price. You can book without creating an account. A vetted, insured driver then collects, and you can follow the journey live.

What does a local courier cost?

Distance and vehicle size set the price. Here are example totals, card fee included, for a standard next-day booking:

Vehicle 10 mi 30 mi 50 mi 100 mi 200 mi
Small van (parcels, documents) £60.72 £60.72 £84.31 £140.21 £242.77
Medium van £70.98 £70.98 £99.29 £165.34 £283.29
Long wheelbase (furniture) £80.21 £80.21 £111.39 £184.83 £318.16
Luton (large furniture, pallets) £103.80 £103.80 £141.54 £230.98 £395.08

Journeys under 30 miles pay a flat local minimum, so a 3-mile hop costs the same as a 25-mile one. Extras are added on top and always shown before you pay:

  • Collect within 1 hour: +30% (minimum £30)
  • Collect within 4 hours: +15% (minimum £15)
  • Same day: +5% (minimum £5)
  • Flexible timing: −5%
  • Out-of-hours collection (London time): £10 evening, £25 overnight, £10 weekend
  • Passed through at cost, no Hauly commission: London Congestion Charge £18 when the route enters the zone in charging hours, Dartford Crossing £3.50, Humber Bridge £5; other toll roads carry an estimated £12 allowance

How quickly can a courier collect?

Nobody can honestly promise a fixed collection time everywhere, because it depends on who is nearby. As a guide:

  • Busy cities such as London, Manchester and Birmingham tend to have the most drivers close by, so collection is often within about an hour.
  • Smaller cities and towns can take longer, particularly out of hours.
  • Booking ahead for a set time removes the guesswork for planned jobs.

If speed matters most, choose the within-1-hour option when you get your quote. It adds 30% (minimum £30) and tells our dispatch to prioritise the job.

Choosing the right vehicle

Sending Vehicle Typical examples
Documents, small boxes, a few parcels Small van Contracts, spare parts, online orders
Large boxes, a fragile item, a small piece of furniture Medium van Monitor, bike box, bedside table
Bulky furniture or several large items Long-wheelbase van Sofa, wardrobe, double bed
Full rooms, pallets, very heavy items Luton van House contents, appliances, stock

Not sure? Our van size guide shows what fits in each, and the quote form defaults to a safe choice.

  • Check the driver is insured. All Hauly drivers carry goods-in-transit insurance with at least £10,000 cover per load.
  • Ask about proof of delivery. Hauly records a signature or photo and GPS-tracked confirmation.
