What drives the price up?

Distance and journey time

The biggest factor. Pricing uses real road distance and drive time, with a minimum charge for short jobs. Per-mile rates taper on longer runs, so a 200-mile trip costs less per mile than a 10-mile one.

Vehicle size

Bigger vans cost more to run and carry larger loads. If your item fits in a small van, book that, not a Luton.

Urgency

"Within 1 hour" needs a driver to head to you immediately, so it carries the biggest uplift. Flexible timing is cheaper. Pick the slowest option that meets your deadline.

Time of day and zones

Evening, overnight and weekend collections carry a flat out-of-hours charge. The London Congestion Charge, Dartford Crossing and Humber Bridge are passed on at cost.

• Contract across town, 10 miles, small van, normal weekday: £61. Needed within the hour? Add 30% of the base price (minimum £30).
• Boxed monitor, 30 miles, medium van: £71, the flat local price, because it is under 30 miles.
• Sofa, 50 miles, long-wheelbase van: £111.
• Two armchairs and a table, 100 miles, Luton: £231.
• Evening collection: add a flat £10. Weekend: add £10.
• Route crossing the London Congestion Charge zone in charging hours: add £18, passed through at cost.

How to get the best price

1. Book the smallest vehicle that fits. A small van costs much less than a Luton.
2. Pick the least urgent option you can. "Same day" or flexible timing is cheaper than "within 1 hour".
3. Collect in business hours. That avoids the out-of-hours charge.
4. Be ready at the door. It keeps the job quick and the driver on schedule.
