TL;DR: Same-day courier costs: £25-£45 local (under 10 miles), £65-£95 city-to-city (50-100 miles), £110-£160 cross-country (150-250 miles). Key factors: distance, vehicle size, urgency, time of day. Booking direct saves 15-25% vs brokers.

Same-day courier costs in the UK range from £25 for a short local run to £180 or more for cross-country delivery with a large van. The price depends on four factors: distance, vehicle size, urgency, and time of day. This guide covers actual 2026 market rates so you know what's fair before you book. Same-day courier prices by city

Prices vary by city due to driver density, fuel costs, and local demand. Here are typical local delivery prices (under 10 miles) for major UK cities:

City Local same-day price Notes
London £35-£80 Central London premium due to congestion
Birmingham £25-£55 Good driver density, competitive rates
Manchester £25-£60 Strong driver network
Leeds £25-£50 Lower cost than southern cities
Glasgow £25-£55 Scottish rates slightly lower
Liverpool £25-£50 Competitive local market
Bristol £25-£55 South West rates
Sheffield £25-£50 Yorkshire pricing
Edinburgh £25-£55 Similar to Glasgow
Cardiff £25-£50 Wales pricing
Nottingham £25-£45 Midlands competitive rates
Newcastle £25-£55 North East rates

What drives the price up?

Distance

The biggest factor. Courier pricing is typically a per-mile rate (50p-£1.50/mile depending on vehicle) plus a minimum charge. Longer distances cost more, but the per-mile rate decreases as distance increases — a 200-mile trip costs less per mile than a 10-mile trip.

Vehicle size

Bigger vans cost more because they consume more fuel, have higher insurance, and are in shorter supply. If your item fits in a car, don't book a van. If it fits in a SWB van, don't book a LWB.

Urgency

"Within 1 hour" commands a premium because it requires a driver to drop everything and head to your collection address immediately. "Same day" gives the driver more flexibility to schedule your job efficiently.

Time of day and day of week

  • Business hours (9am-5pm, Mon-Fri): Standard rates, best driver availability
  • Evenings (5pm-10pm): May carry a 10-20% premium
  • Overnight (10pm-6am): Higher premium, fewer drivers available
  • Weekends: Saturday is usually standard rate; Sunday may carry a 10-15% premium
  • Bank holidays: May carry a premium

With Hauly, weekend and evening collections are available at standard rates with no surcharges.

Waiting time

If the driver has to wait at the collection or delivery address (beyond a reasonable time), waiting charges may apply. Hauly includes 30 minutes of waiting time free; traditional brokers may charge after 10-15 minutes.

How to get the best price

1. Book the smallest vehicle that fits

Don't book a Luton van for a single chair. Check the van size guide and choose the smallest van that fits your item. A small van can be half the price of a Luton.

2. Choose "same day" over "within 1 hour"

Unless it's a genuine emergency, "same day" gives the same delivery outcome at a lower price. The driver still collects within 60 minutes — you just don't get priority dispatch.

3. Book during business hours

Morning bookings (before 11am) get standard rates and the best driver availability. Late afternoon and evening bookings may carry premiums.

4. Be ready for collection

Have your item packed and at the door when the driver arrives. Waiting charges add up quickly if you're not ready.

5. Book direct, not through a broker

Traditional courier brokers add 15-25% margin on top of the driver's rate. Platforms like Hauly connect you directly with drivers, so you pay the driver's rate plus a small platform fee — significantly cheaper.

Same-day courier vs other delivery options

Service Speed Price (local) Best for
Royal Mail 1st Class 1-3 days £3-£10 Non-urgent small parcels
Royal Mail Special Delivery Next day by 1pm £7-£15 Important small items
Parcelforce 24 Next day £10-£20 Larger parcels, next day
Same-day courier Same day (2-4 hrs) £25-£45 Urgent, bulky, fragile, valuable
Traditional courier broker Same day £35-£60 Same as above, but more expensive
